EXHIBITS B and C
Joseph Adams, a retired business man who was previously involved in the Livestock Commission was a Trustee of The Orchestral Association. Adams is weak at math. He says he’s known Stock for over 3 years, since 1905. Since the documents are dated in 1919, I think it’s 13 years. One paragraph of note:
“The trustees of The Orchestral Association are prominent citizens of Chicago, all of them citizens of the US, who serve as such trustees without profit or pay, and affiant verily believes all of them to be of the most unquestioned and profound loyalty to their country; that the trustees of said Association believe Frederick A Stock to be a conductor of the highest artistic achievement, recognized throughout the world as one of the greatest living conductors of orchestras; that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has been built up through more than thirty years of labor and expense into one of the recognized great orchestras of the world; that if the trustees of said Association did not believe in the loyalty to this country of said Frederick A Stock, notwithstanding his superior standing as a conductor, they would not retain him as such conductor, but that, believing as they do in his loyalty, they deplore that it has been advertised that the conductor of one of our country’s great orchestras is an alien enemy, and fear that if said Stock cannot be given a standing before the public consistent with the loyalty he bears to this country, an irrevocable injury may be done to the reputation of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, with the result that there may be destroyed an instrumentality created with infinite patience and at great expense for the advancement of the country’s musical taste.”
Included are a letter from Stock to The Orchestral Association suggesting that he step aside rather than injure the reputation of Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Their reply, 6 weeks in coming, temporarily removes him, and lists a number of reasons why they don’t question his loyalty, including reports of addresses by him to his orchestra regarding the obligations of foreign citizens to the US during the war.
Philo Otis, VP of The Orchestral Association, submitted Exhibit C, and included an affidavit from Charles Hamill, the president of The Orchestral Association.
